How to avoid business burnout

It’s coming up to that time of year when you might be feeling a bit worn out and tired from a year of working hard to grow your business. Whether business ramps up or dies down for you around this time, here are some great tips to keep in mind when you’re starting to feel the strain.

1. Take a break
This might be the last thing you want to do, but you might need it more than you know. If you think you just don’t have time to do that, make time, otherwise you’re not going to be the best you can be for your business. If you can’t take time off over Christmas, make sure you schedule even a longer weekend to take a break from everything at some point in the near future. If you have a usual period where business slows down, try to schedule some time off here every year to keep you refreshed.

2. Avoid procrastination
As much as you might be all over everything in your business, there will always be those few things that need to be done that you really don’t want to do – whether it’s calling people to have the chat about unpaid invoices, or getting through that stack of paperwork. Even though they might be small things, the fact that they’re sitting undone won’t be helping your stress levels at all. Set aside some time each day to just get them done so you don’t have them sitting at the back of your mind.

3. Delegate
Even if it’s mostly you running the business, remember that you can always reach out to others for help. If you have staff, trust them to do their job and make sure you’re letting them get things done and not trying to control everything. If you don’t have staff, or only one or two, see if there are other ways you can get things done – you might look to outsource a few things, or your accounting team might be able to help you out with more than you think!

4. Get regular advice
It can be overwhelming if you feel like you’re doing everything in your business and nothing is getting 100% of your attention. Engaging someone like a business adviser will help you to feel like you aren’t in it alone. They can help give you a few things to focus on at a time and work with you to achieve your goals. Seeing your business through fresh eyes, an adviser can help you to compartmentalise things and take the right steps to achieve your goals.

5. Focus on the positive
Did you achieve something great but didn’t get a chance to celebrate because something else came up that you needed to sort? We often focus more on our problems than our achievements, and to avoid this negative focus that can lead to burn out, try to remember the things that you’ve done well recently. Remember how you were when you first started, and how even your first sale was considered a success – how far have you come since then and what have you achieved in that time? Likely a lot!
